Putting Employment First

New Star is one of several agencies piloting a new employment initiative based upon a program called Individual Placement and Support (IPS). Used first within the mental health community, IPS is proving to be effective in helping individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities find and keep long-term, rewarding jobs within the community.

While we have always offered vocational services, our program, like those at similar agencies, had focused on the need to provide pre-vocational training for our clients (in our sheltered workshop, for example) before considering community job opportunities. IPS has shown us the value in reversing that order. Our first priority when it comes to employment is to help our clients find jobs if they express an interest in working within the community. Visit our Employment Services page to learn more about the opportunities that IPS is creating.
